Design Your Life. Thinking from Ayse Birsel.
Ayse Birsel is co-founder and creative director of Birsel + Seck, an empathy-driven product design studio in New York City that partners with Fortune 500 clients to bring innovation to market. She also has designed for Herman Miller.
She used to identify herself as a designer of products, but now she says she is a designer of life. And that concept is something I’ve been thinking about lately because of our recent workshop at Herman Miller, where we asked participants to think about how they can apply Herman Miller’s Design tenets into their lives and careers.
Her take on designing your life is to look at things with a new lens, and the way to do that is to deconstruct what you want to design; develop a new point of view; reconstruct a hierarchy; and express the result in a new way. You can read more about her philosophy here.
She is inspirational in encouraging others to use Design to take a step back and look at your life from a different perspective, thoughts she shares in the video below.
“Design is imagination,” she said, “and if you can imagine something, you can make it happen.”
